Driving Licence in the Gulf: A Guide for Drivers

Driver jobs (light, heavy, bus, delivery) are among the most common jobs in the Gulf. For most of them you need a local driving licence of the country where you work. Here is how it usually works.

1. Can I convert my home licence?

Some GCC countries allow holders of licences from certain countries to exchange them for a local licence, sometimes after a short test. Many other nationalities, including most South Asian licences, must go through a local driving school and pass the tests. The list of eligible countries changes, so check the official traffic authority of the country.

2. The usual steps through a driving school

  1. Valid residence (Iqama / Emirates ID) and an eye test.
  2. Register at an approved driving school and attend the required theory and practical classes (the number of hours often depends on your experience and a placement test).
  3. Pass the theory (signs and rules) test – often available in Arabic, English and Urdu.
  4. Pass the road test. Then the licence is issued, usually digitally in the government app.

3. Heavy vehicles and buses

Truck, trailer and bus licences are separate categories with extra training and tests. Many companies also ask for a professional driver card or operator certificates. Keep copies of your experience letters from home – they help.
